Quynh Anh
The Alchemy of Memory

For artist Quynh Anh, traditional Vietnamese lacquer is more than a medium; it is a profound language of memory and emotion. Through the resilient depths of sơn ta, she masterfully translates silent inner dialogues into luminous, layered masterpieces, capturing the essence of time, vulnerability, and enduring beauty.

Born in Da Nang and now creating in the cultural heart of Hanoi, Quynh Anh, known intuitively as Soong, belongs to a vanguard of Vietnamese artists seamlessly bridging ancestral heritage with profound personal introspection. Since graduating from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, she has embraced traditional lacquer (sơn ta) not merely as a technique, but as a philosophy. Lacquer is a notoriously demanding medium; it requires infinite patience, meticulous layering, and relentless polishing. For Quynh Anh, this rhythmic, laborious devotion mirrors the soul’s journey, a slow, honest descent into the self, completely devoid of the need for easy answers.

Quynh Anh does not paint merely to conjure aesthetic beauty, but to decrypt the complexities of existence, love, and nature. Her canvases oscillate beautifully between tenderness and turbulence, intimacy and the infinite. In “Inside Me”, vivid pigments erupt like a subterranean landscape, portraying childhood not as a linear memory, but as a deeply held emotional topography. Meanwhile, in “In the Garden”, motifs of moss, dappled light, and flora emerge as potent symbols of quiet endurance and eternal renewal.

There is also a strong sense of care in her practice. Works such as Voi con reveal a softer emotional world, where affection, play, and protection are held within the image of a small elephant. Meanwhile, paintings like The Dance and Mơ explore the tension between body and void, form and invisible feeling. Her figures do not simply occupy space; they seem to emerge from it, as if shaped by dream, memory, and instinct.

Her evocative trajectory is highlighted by an array of acclaimed showcases, from her early presence at the CUCA Contemporary Exhibition in 2015 to her recent participation in Art for You in 2025. Each exhibition marks a deliberate step in her ongoing dialogue with, and preservation of, Vietnam’s prestigious lacquer craft.

In Quynh Anh’s work, lacquer becomes more than surface. It becomes a place where silence gathers, where memory takes shape, and where the artist learns to cherish every moment exactly as it is.
